a soft conclusion

i wrote your name on my palm
like a scarlet letter
just blue biro fading and catching
at my life line
but i took you with me
and when i shook and when my stomach
made me crease and curse and cry
i dug my fingernails into your name
and it felt like maybe it wasn’t so bad
as the world tilted slightly off its axis
and my knees started to shake shake shake
and i clenched my fist around your name
keeping it safe
like a precious stone or a lucky coin
but imprinted on my skin
the ink sweating off and
my hands clammy and tight not tight tight not tight
fingers restless against leather
and your name
your name on my palm
like a scarlet letter
